The Duty of Man

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

“The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.”

-‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭12‬:‭13‬-‭14‬

Does life ever feel too complicated to you?

I know it does to me.

My life feels like a constant state of busyness. There’s work to do, my family to take care of, bills to pay, chores to accomplish, and, on top of all that, the important responsibility of spiritual leadership within the family. It’s a lot for us fathers to handle.

I think it helps, though, to simplify things. I love the passage from Ecclesiastes‬ above because it simplifies our whole purpose down to just a few sentences.

What is the whole duty of man? To fear God and keep His commandments.

How awesome is that? In a world full of responsibilities, that is our singular duty.

If we can successfully fear God and keep His commandments, everything else will fall into place.
