Open the Door

Revelation 3:20

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”

-Revelation 3:20

We are obsessed with staying busy.

We wake up, eat a hurried breakfast, get dressed, and go to work—all while racing against the clock.

Then we’re on the clock as we work, putting in hard hours to earn a wage.

At five o’clock we head home, fighting against traffic during a busy rush hour.

We stay busy after work too—after all, kids need to be fed, bathed, and put to bed.

Then, we need to catch up on any remaining chores and tasks before going to bed.

We are busy all the time.

That’s not a bad thing—after all, most of our busy schedule is necessary and good. It’s good to stay busy at work. It’s good to stay busy with our families.

But what’s bad is when we don’t take time to listen to God.

We can spend so much of our lives caught up in our own busy schedule that we don’t make room for God. We don’t take the time to listen to His nudging voice. We don’t take the time to listen to the Holy Spirit within our hearts.

I love the illustration of Jesus standing at the door and knocking, because it shows two important things:

First, it shows that God is intentionally reaching out to us.

After all, Luke 19:10 tells us that “the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Jesus has come to us. He is trying to speak to our hearts.

Second, the illustration of Jesus standing at the door shows that all we need to do is open the door.

That’s it.

There’s no magic code. There’s no special language. There’s no unique knowledge.

Jesus has come to us. He has knocked on the door of our hearts.

It is up to us to answer.

It is up to us to speak to Him.
